Center for Research on Justice and Conflict Resolution (CRJ)

The Center for Research on Justice and Conflict Resolution (CRJ) is a research team within the Civil Law Laboratory at the University of Paris Panthéon-Assas, led by Cécile CHAINAIS, with dedicated premises for the study of justice located near the Panthéon.

Professor Cécile CHAINAIS and Charles JARROSSON are respectively the director and deputy director of the Center.

The Center welcomes professors, lecturers, doctoral students, and postdoctoral researchers from the University of Paris Panthéon-Assas, as well as from other French and foreign universities (German, Italian, English, Chinese, Quebecois researchers, etc.).

Founded in March 2015, it resulted from the merger of two preexisting research centers, namely the Center for Conflict Resolution Studies (CERC) and the Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution Methods (CEMARC). Its purpose is to study all forms of contemporary justice, both jurisdictional and non-jurisdictional, state and non-state. The research conducted covers a wide range of topics, from civil procedure in its strictest classical sense to arbitration and alternative dispute resolution methods.

Furthermore, the concept of justice is approached from the transversal perspective of procedural law, understood both as a comparative law of internal procedures (civil, criminal, and administrative litigation) and as the pursuit of a common law of the trial, as highlighted by the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights through the notion of the right to a fair trial.

The research endeavors to understand the major transformations in contemporary justice, such as the Europeanization and internationalization of procedural sources, the growing importance of alternative methods, or the digitalization of justice.

These issues are addressed through a transversal approach that gives significant importance to the history, philosophy, and sociology of justice. The research conducted aims to place the most recent developments in civil procedure within a broader historical context.

Emphasis is also placed on comparative and international civil procedure. The Center thus hosts doctoral students preparing comparative law theses focusing on justice. Equipped with a library, the Center seeks to develop a collection of documents related to justice and procedure in various European countries.

This international orientation is facilitated through collaboration with other European research laboratories, such as the Department of Civil Procedure at the Catholic University of Louvain-La-Neuve in Belgium (with Professors Jean-François VAN DROOGHENBROECK and Jacques VAN COMPERNOLLE), the Istituto di diritto processuale civile at the University of Milan (with Professor Achille SALETTI), and the Max Planck Institute in Luxembourg (with Professor Burkhard HESS). The Center promotes these exchanges by hosting visiting foreign professors.

In general, the research center benefits from partnerships both within the judicial field (Court of Cassation, Paris Court of Appeal, Institute for Advanced Studies on Justice) and with legal professionals (Council of State Lawyers, Paris Bar Association, EUROJURIS Group) and other institutions (Paris Chamber of Commerce), which allow it to anchor its work in approaches that take into account judicial realities and the needs of professionals.

Documentary Collection
One of the main activities of the CRJ is the establishment of a specialized documentary collection dedicated to studies on justice, trial law, arbitration, and alternative dispute resolution methods, approached from the perspectives of domestic, European, and comparative law.

The specialized nature of this library, distinct from general private law libraries, allows for the organization of the collection according to a specific classification system, particularly suitable for those conducting research on justice.

The library benefited from the generous bequest of a significant portion of books from the personal library of the late Roger PERROT, formerly a professor at the University of Paris Panthéon-Assas, from its inception.
