The Center for Legal History and Institutions ( Le Centre d’histoire du droit et des institutions - CHDI) aims to accommodate all researchers from the Jean Gaudemet Institute of Legal History (CNRS, UMR 7184) whose work does not fall within the projects of the Center for Ancient Law or the Center for the Study of Legal History.

The research themes developed by the team, which are diverse, span chronologically from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era and encompass both public and private law in their various branches.

However, the research conducted by the scholars revolves around two essential axes, both of which align with the general project of the Jean Gaudemet Institute of Legal History:

  • The contribution of Roman legal culture to the construction of public institutions and the state, from the end of the High Middle Ages to the end of the Ancien Régime.
  • The role of medieval canon law as a vehicle for the diffusion of Roman legal principles in the Western world during the same period.

Organization

Director: Franck ROUMY, Professor
The Center for Legal History and Institutions brings together most of the legal history professors at Paris-Panthéon-Assas University who are not directly involved in the highly specific activities of the institute's other two research centers.

Almost all members of the center teach at the doctoral level, which leads them, based on their own specialization, to supervise the research of numerous doctoral students in various fields of legal history, particularly in public legal history, private legal history, and medieval canon and Roman law history.

The CHDI regularly hosts foreign researchers conducting their research in France.
