Historical trends, economic uncertainty and Joe Biden’s eroding popularity had led many pollsters and observers of the American political system to announce a red wave (a large Republican victory) during the midterm elections of 2022. If, technically, it can be said that Republicans won the midterms (they gained eight seats in Congress), the reality is that there was certainly no red wave and Joe Biden could easily be described as the night’s biggest winner. As the 2024 presidential election is now around the corner, this conference will analyse the results of the last midterm elections to try to understand where the American electorate is at these days and how strong the two parties but also the different (potential) candidates for 2024 are.
